Gowanus Arts, 295 Douglass Street, Brooklyn, NY
STH is offering partial dance scholarships and work/study opportunities to young artists, ages 8 to 15 years old, with or without previous dance experience. Awards are based on financial need, passion and merit. Children of color are particularly encouraged to apply.
Different from previous years, this year’s auditions will be held in-class at STH throughout the first week of the fall semester, from Monday – Sunday, September 14 – 20. All applicants must fill out scholarship application forms and parents must submit most recent tax returns prior to attending audition classes. Full schedule of class times and ages.
STH YOUNG ARTIST DANCE/THEATER APPLICANTS
This pre- professional training program is geared toward developing the most outstanding and original dance/theater artists of tomorrow. Young Artists create and perform their own original choreography throughout the year, work with professional guest artists, and are often invited to participate in SPOKE THE HUB’s adult professional productions.
Over the years, STH Young Artists have also earned scholarships to the American Dance Festival, the Alvin Ailey School, and the Feld Ballet, in addition to colleges throughout the country upon graduation. They have also performed with STH’s adult company at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, at the World Trade Center, and at Lincoln Center, as well as performing independently at such venues as the Kitchen, P.S. 122, DTW, and with Meredith Monk/The House. Grown alumni of this youth program have recently presented their own work – or performed in the work of others – at Danspace, Judson Church, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Kitchen, Dixon Place, the Socrates Sculpture Garden and the Brooklyn Academy of Music.
All STH Young Artists are required to take a minimum of two technique classes a week at Spoke the Hub, and must be available for occasional additional rehearsals and performances throughout the year. This is a year long commitment.
Spoke the Hub, founded by Artistic Director Elise Long, has been trailblazing in Brooklyn and beyond since 1979. Called a “neighborhood treasure,” “cultural pioneers” and a community “staple” by the press and public, Spoke offers a wide spectrum of classes, performances, and special community events for all ages, all year round.
