Works on the Wall : Mary Elmer-DeWitt- Mar 7 – 28, 2026

MARY ELMER-DEWITT
The works in this show were selected from a larger exhibit in which I considered the influence my mother and two grandmothers had on my artwork and on my identity as a maker.
One grandmother’s cut-glass compote inspired the compote series and the underlying grid of her needlepoints inspired a series of woven paintings. I borrowed the hydrangeas and color palette from a silk screen made by my other grandmother and the more quilt-like pieces were inspired by my early sewing experiences with my mother.
Mary Elmer-DeWitt is a native New Yorker who currently lives in Brooklyn. She is a graduate of NYU (BA) and Pratt Institute (MA) where she has been a professor in the Art and Design Education Department since 2004. She began painting in 2008 and is a member of Atlantic Gallery in Manhattan and Park Slope Windsor Terrace Artists in Brooklyn. NY.
