Since receiving my BFA in printmaking at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and an MFA in painting from Claremont Graduate University in California I have maintained a studio practice along with a varied career as teacher, designer, art director, gallerist, project manager and decorative painter. Originally from North Carolina, I moved to New York in my 20’s in order to immerse myself in the art world that I so loved. I live and have my studio in Brooklyn surrounded by family and a large exciting and nurturing art community.
My 30 year career as Director of Decorative Painting at Evergreene Architectural Arts as well as my deep appreciation for the decorative arts has been a huge influence on my painting career. My long-standing passion and interest in pattern, whether it be in nature, human nature or the man-made world has continually provided inspiration for my work.
In the 1980’s I was active in the Pattern and Decoration movement where my love of patterns culled from a lifetime of researching and collecting old wallpapers, historic stencils, textiles and other “flotsam and jetsam” married with my interest in storytelling led me to producing paintings based on surface patterns with underlying narratives. The mixed media work I’ve done since then has continued this path of layering pattern with narrative imagery.
The current monoprints started out as an experiment in a new medium for me. Though I majored in printmaking as an undergraduate, it has been many years since I put my hand to printmaking…. and all by hand without a press. I’ve been looking for a way to shake up and loosen up my methods and monoprinting seemed like an interesting solution. I’ve had a lot of fun experimenting over the past several months and am pleased with the results. I hope you will be as well.
